{"id":2572,"date":"2022-03-02T21:21:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T21:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pockethealthqa.wpengine.com\/?p=2572"},"modified":"2025-05-09T16:02:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T20:02:50","slug":"patient-spotlight-when-image-sharing-is-borderless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pockethealth.com\/patient-resources\/patient-spotlight-when-image-sharing-is-borderless\/","title":{"rendered":"Patient Spotlight: When Image Sharing is Borderless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Our Patient Spotlight Series allows us to share stories from people in our community who have used PocketHealth to make positive changes in their lives. <\/b><\/span><b>This week, we sat down with Jeanne, a patient from northern Ontario who used the service to share her scans with a doctor in Costa Rica who helped her find relief from persistent pain<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jeanne didn\u2019t realize just how life-changing PocketHealth could be until she was on a much-needed vacation in Costa Rica in late 2021.Jeanne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. After years of treatment, which included chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy, she was facing a new challenge in the form of persistent knee, back and hip pain that was slowly reducing her ability to walk. Her medical history required so many scans that she couldn\u2019t remember them all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Jeanne\u2019s daughter had been urging her to sign up for the service that allows patients to easily access their medical images from anywhere in the world. \u201cMy daughter is a nurse and she kept saying, \u2018It\u2019s really great for you because you always have your test results right there, they don\u2019t have to ask for it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As soon as she took her daughter\u2019s advice, Jeanne gained instant access to the images her doctors have been looking at for years. \u201cI found it very friendly,\u201d she said of the PocketHealth website. \u201cMy daughter uses it all the time for her kids. If you\u2019re not a medical person, you don\u2019t understand but at least you can bring it to a medical person. I found it quite easy to access.\u201d She soon discovered it\u2019s just as easy to share those images with others. \u201cSo, I\u2019m booked to go see my son who owns a retirement home in Costa Rica,\u201d she said. \u201cAbout two or three weeks before my trip, he says, \u2018Mom, can you send me all your scans?\u2019\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>She made her way to PocketHealth and quickly obliged, unaware that she was already on the road to feeling better. \u201cWe get there and he says, \u2018Mom, on Monday you\u2019re seeing a doctor. You don\u2019t have to agree to anything, he\u2019ll just talk to you.\u2019 Everything was based on the scans here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The trip soon revealed that a new set of eyes on an old set of scans can make a world of difference. The doctor in Costa Rica was able to diagnose Jeanne\u2019s condition and offer an innovative form of treatment that provided relief from the pain that was making her life increasingly unbearable. \u201cBecause of PocketHealth, I was able to get all the help that I needed,\u201d she said. \u201cThey finally told me what was wrong after five years.\u201dNow that she\u2019s back home and feeling better, Jeanne marvels at how far things have come since the days when she would write to the hospital requesting access to results from a specific scan. \u201cWhen I first got hurt in 2018, it was a whole big rigmarole,\u201d she said. \u201cMy daughter was here \u2014 she was trying to access the MRI and couldn\u2019t access it. It became a nightmare. Now it\u2019s not a nightmare, it\u2019s an email.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Since taking control of her health, Jeanne said she no longer feels like her options are limited to the nearest hospital. \u201cI\u2019m in northern Ontario,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I decide that I want to go to Toronto \u2014 now that I know how useful PocketHealth is \u2014 I can go there and have everything at hand.
