This change, which took effect on October 8, 2024, is expected to enhance early breast cancer detection, leading to earlier interventions and treatments. By identifying cancer sooner, the program aims to reduce mortality rates and facilitate quicker, more effective treatments\u2014ultimately saving more lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Key changes and impact<\/h2>\n<p>Eligible women, Two-Spirit, trans and nonbinary people will now be able to schedule a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pockethealth.com\/2023\/09\/05\/diagnostic-mammogram-and-breast-cancer\/\">mammogram<\/a> at any OBSP location from ages 40 to 74, without needing a referral.<\/p>\n<p>These individuals will be eligible for screening through OBSP if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have no new breast cancer symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Have no personal history of breast cancer<\/li>\n<li>Have not had a mastectomy<\/li>\n<li>Have not had a screening mammogram within the last 11 months<\/li>\n<li>If transfeminine, have used feminizing hormones for at least 5 years in a row<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This change is expected to result in an additional 130,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pockethealth.com\/2023\/09\/05\/diagnostic-mammogram-and-breast-cancer\/\">mammogram screenings<\/a> annually across Ontario and increase the chances of early detection.<\/p>\n<p>PocketHealth&#8217;s breast health tools provide patients with personalized breast cancer risk assessments and simplified mammogram management. This significantly improves patient outcomes and lowers mortality rates. Early detection can also lead to less invasive treatments, potentially avoiding the need for chemotherapy or a full mastectomy.<\/p>\n<p>Early detection is especially important because early stages of breast cancer often present no symptoms, allowing the disease to progress untreated. Additionally, breast cancer rates are steadily increasing in younger patients and those without obvious risk factors, further emphasizing the need for early screenings. Mammograms and discussions of health history play a crucial role in deciding the future course of care.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some statistics that highlight the need for early detection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/breast\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breast cancer makes up 25%<\/a> of all newly diagnosed cancers in AFAB individuals in 2024, with roughly 84 Canadians being diagnosed every day.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/mammogram-age-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One in six<\/a> new breast cancer cases occurs in people aged 40-50.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mammogram-breast-cancer-screening-guidelines-2b4ebc0dcd0335fd08d17e2e03bc7b23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breast cancer rates among patients in their 40s<\/a> has risen 2% each year since 2015, meaning it is increasingly important to screen this age group.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbreastcancer.org\/early-detection-of-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five-year survival rate<\/a> for early-detected breast cancer is as high as 99%.
